The Refugee Self Reliance Initiative - What Is It?
The Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative (RSRI) promotes opportunities for refugees around the world to become self-reliant and achieve a better quality of life. In 2018, the RSRI launched, with the goal of collectively reaching five million refugees in five years (2019-2023) with programming that puts them on a path to self-reliance, moving them from precarious lives of privation and aid dependence to greater stability and self-support through their own income.
The Self-Reliance Index (SRI) is the first global tool used to “measure the progress of refugee households towards self-reliance.” As the first organization in Jerash Refugee Camp to deploy the SRI, Sitti aims to design and provide more effective services through highlighting organizational service gaps, identify target populations for support, and better inform budget priorities. Sitti administers the SRI within our community population every 6 months (December/January and June/July).
Sitti Social Enterprise is using the self-reliance index, the first global tool used to “measure the progress of refugee households towards self-reliance.” This tool has been administered within our community population every 6 months. Rather than a questionnaire, Sitti views the RSRI as an assessment tool. Through the usage of the SRI, Sitti will be able to get a better understanding of how to create and implement more holistic programming
The SRI measures refugee household progress through: :
Discussions with client / Direct observation / Knowledge of local conditions / Prior knowledge of household’s circumstances

Sitti’s upcoming impact report, will evaluate our impact on the refugee community in Jerash Camp, areas where we have progressed, as well as areas where we can improve. The findings published in this report will inform our future program design to better suit the needs of the refugee community with whom we work and support.
Sitti works and contracts with strategic partners in Jerash who understand the needs of the Jerash refugee camp community. Strategic partners connect Sitti with individuals who are eager to apply existing skill sets while also learning new skills. These individuals become Sitti artisans and create products such as Sitti soap bars and wooden soap dishes. Sitti’s programming goes beyond providing a sense of financial security, it provides refugees with training opportunities catered to their personal growth and professional development goals.
Sitti profits make their way back to strategic partners and the individuals they support in Jerash Refugee Camp through wages and programmatic development.
