International Women’s Day 2022
This International Women’s day, Sitti wants to highlight the importance of what it means to #BreakTheBias and share some ways you can show your support for Sitti and our women-owned brand partners.
What is International Women’s Day?
The labour movements and the increasing demand for women to be treated as equals to their male counterparts in the early twentieth century initiated the start of what we know now as International Women’s Day.
On March 19th, 1911, over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland took part in showing their support for women. Due to the large turnout, other countries followed suit in the following years. In 1975, the United Nations acknowledged March 8th as International Women’s Day. This particular date was settled on because, in 1917, a group of Russian women initiated their four-day strike on March 8th, demanding the right to vote.
We now celebrate International Women’s Day globally every year on March 8th and we can do this by learning about the history of the women’s rights movements and the progress made since then. We celebrate women’s economic, cultural, and political achievements and continue to raise awareness of the progress that still needs to be achieved.
The Theme for International Women’s Day 2022
“The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn't enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.”
