The Afghan Tatreez Woodcraft Collection: Crafting Futures, One Motif at a Time

At Sitti, we deeply believe in the power of tradition, self-resilience, and the unbreakable threads that connect us across borders. At the heart of our mission lies an unshakable belief, that meaningful work can rebuild lives fractured by displacement. We don't just intend to create jobs, but instead cultivate dignity, purpose and self-determination.

We’re honoured to introduce The Afghan Tatreez Collection—a collaboration with Hidden Humanity Global that bridges Palestinian heritage with Afghan craftsmanship, weaving together stories of displacement, hope, and shared identity.

A Collection Rooted in Shared Resilience

Tatreez, the intricate embroidery deeply tied to Palestinian identity, is more than just needle and thread—it's a commitment to perseverance, a testament to heritage, and an art that resists erasure. When we first envisioned this collection, we asked ourselves, how can we extend this legacy of empowerment to another community fighting to preserve its future?

The answer came in partnership with Hidden Humanity, as they work with young Afghan boys orphaned by war and displacement. These boys, whose lives have been marked by unimaginable loss, are now reclaiming their futures—one stitch at a time.

Sitti's Commitment to Preserving Heritage: Hidden Humanity’s Work with Afghan Artisans

In the eastern mountains of Afghanistan, the region of Nuristan, holds a centuries-old heritage—its exquisite woodcarving tradition. Passed down through generations, these intricate designs etched into furniture, doors, and household objects, are much more than art and aesthetics; They’re a testament to cultural identity. Yet today, this heritage faces extinction, threatened by displacement and state-violence.

This is where Hidden Humanity has stepped in. Partnering with young Afghans—many orphaned or displaced by war—the organization transforms woodcarving into a lifeline. Through hands-on training, these artisans reclaim not only their heritage but also their futures. Their work becomes an act of defiance and resistance, a way to honour their identities and traditions, while building economic stability.

Through this initiative, they provide more than skills and training; they offer mentorship, market access, and a global platform for Nuristan’s artisans. The result? A renaissance of woodcarving that sustains communities and safeguards a vanishing art form tied closely to Afghan culture.

For these young craftsmen, woodcarving is no longer just tradition—it has become a sense of dignity, purpose, and hope in the lives of Afghan youth. With every piece they create, they prove that even in the face of upheaval, culture cannot be erased.
