World Refugee Day - Reflecting on how far we've gotten

Today, unlike any other day, today is a day to commemorate and recognize refugees globally.

We take a moment to reflect on the resilience, courage, and contributions of millions of refugees around the globe. As we honor their journeys and their strength, we also highlight the critical work being done to support them, including the initiatives led by Sitti Social Enterprise in collaboration with our community partners in Jordan and Palestine.

This year more than ever, we've been hit emotionally and physically as we have been witnessing a live genocide unfold before our eyes in Gaza. In Jordan 98% of the refugees we work with are previously displaced from Gaza and as such all of them have ties and families in Gaza still. We've lost friends, family and loved ones - as such our commitment to give back and stand up with refugees has been more than ever.

The Latest Refugee Statistics

According to the latest data from the UNHCR, there are over 100 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, with more than 26 million of them recognized as refugees. This staggering number underscores the urgent need for continued support and sustainable solutions. The majority of refugees come from war-torn regions, with Syria, Afghanistan, and South Sudan contributing to a significant portion of this population. These individuals have been forced to leave their homes due to conflict, persecution, and human rights violations, seeking safety and a better future for themselves and their families.

Collaborating with Community Partners in Jordan and Palestine

Our work is deeply rooted in strong partnerships with local organizations in Jordan and Palestine. These collaborations enable us to extend our reach and impact, ensuring that our efforts are both culturally sensitive and highly effective.

Jordan:

In Jordan, we work closely with community centers and local NGOs to provide vocational training and employment opportunities to refugees. One of our key partners, the Jerash Refugee Camp Women's Cooperative, plays a vital role in our soap-making and handicraft initiatives. By training women in these skills, we not only provide them with a source of income but also foster a sense of community and empowerment.

One of our featured Community partners in Jordan is Khoyoot, where we source our handmade embroidered pouches, totes and cards

Palestine:

In Palestine, our partnerships focus on education and capacity-building.  Our partnership with local Palestinian Community partners has been instrumental in creating art and craft workshops that preserve cultural heritage while providing economic opportunities for refugees.

Our featured Community partner in Palestine is Darzah, where we source and work with Community members to source our bookmarks, scrunchies and more.

Stories of Hope and Resilience

The impact of our work can be seen in the stories of individuals like Hanan, a refugee from Syria who found a new lease on life through our soap-making program in Jordan. With the skills and confidence she gained, Hanan now runs her own small business, supporting her family and contributing to her community.
